1. Power Supply Issues (Most Common)

Before assuming your motor is broken, verify that it is receiving adequate, stable power.

  • Insufficient Voltage: Small motors have strict rated voltages (such as 1.5V, 3V, 6V, or 12V). If you supply a 3V motor with a single 1.5V battery or use a power source with low current output, it may only vibrate slightly without rotating.
  • Reversed Polarity: Connecting positive and negative wires backward typically won’t fry a simple DC motor, but it can cause operational issues under heavy loads. Simply swap the wires to test.
  • Poor Electrical Contact: Look out for broken wire insulation, cold solder joints, rusted battery springs, or loose plugs. A loose connection can look plugged in while delivering zero functional current.

2. Mechanical Jams & High Resistance

If electricity is flowing but the rotor cannot physically move, the motor will stall.

  • Debris on the Shaft: Check for hair, dust, glue, or gear fragments wrapped around the rotating shaft. Spin the shaft manually—if it feels stiff or locked, it is jammed.
  • Gearbox Lockups (Geared Motors): If your motor uses a reduction gearbox, check for misaligned gears, lack of lubrication, or broken teeth causing excessive resistance.
  • Dry or Rusted Bearings: Long-term storage can cause bearings to dry out and rust, creating massive rotational friction that makes the motor just hum instead of spin.

3. Internal Motor Damage

  • Winding Breakage (Open Circuit): The internal enameled copper wire can burn or snap, resulting in zero vibration or sound when powered. Use a multimeter to measure resistance; infinity () means the coil is broken.
  • Carbon Brush Wear (Brushed Motors): In small brushed motors, worn-out carbon brushes prevent current conduction.
  • Coil Short Circuit: If internal coils short out, your power source will heat up instantly, voltage will drop drastically, and the motor will only twitch.

4. Driver & Circuit Board Issues

If your motor is wired into a control circuit or PCB:

  • Blown Transistors or MOSFETs: Control boards with damaged switching components fail to output proper driving voltage.
